The apocryphal writing 'Protoevangelium of James' records that "Mary was presented in the Temple at the age of 12 to live there in seclusion while learning the Law and beginning to serve God with her weaving and embroidery" (cf. Dictionary of Mary, p. 118). That kind of seclusion was a deep encounter with God. If we deepen our prayer, we can emulate Mary and can be considered, in the words of today's gospel, "mother and brothers" of Jesus. |
