His Holiness The Pope
Pope Francis

Born Jorge Martio Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936, he was ordained priest in 1969, he served as Argentina's superior general of the Society of Jesus. He became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and was made a Cardinal in 2001 by St. John Paul II. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on February 28, 2013, a papal conclave elected Cardinal Bergoglio as his successor on March 13, 2013. He chose Francis as his papal name in honor to St. Francis of Assisi. Francis is the first Jesuit Pope, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first Pope from outside Europe since Syrian Gregory III.
