Before one is proclaimed a saint (canonization), he/she is first declared blessed (beatification). Therefore, every saint is blessed. The latter is rendered "makarios" in Greek which can also mean "happy." Who are the happy ones? Those who live the beatitudes of today's gospel -- the poor, the merciful, the meek, the pure of heart et al. The saints have responded to this call. That is why they are blessed. We can do the same 'coz we still have time. |
