Notice the sequence of words in today's gospel. Zaccheus was "a wealthy man... and was trying to see Jesus." What does that imply? That you are rich doesn't mean you have everything. This tax collector was evidently affluent. He was literally rich but figuratively poor because He felt empty. No amount of wordly affluence could satisfy the deepest longings of his heart. To be with God -- that's the only wealth that matters. |
