An old song says, "Wrappings are not the gifts." While "John" [from the Hebrew " Yehohanan" which means "God is gracious"] can mean "gift," the precursor admits he is not the gift but only a wrapper. He may be shining and shimmering but he only wraps the object of attention which is the gift itself. Yes, he only points to Jesus whose way he prepares. He is only a spotlight as Jesus is the highlight. As we preach, Jesus should be made known, not ourselves. We are only wrappings. He is the real Gift. |
