The Spanish word for gratitude which is "Gracias" obviously reveals that there is a grace/blessing ("gracia") to be grateful for. Magnificat is a hymn of gratitude already extant in the Old Testament which Luke put on the lips of Mary who sings it in behalf of the people of God gratefully acknowledging that the "Almighty has done great things." Because we, too, have been blessed so abundantly, we say "Gracias" to God to proclaim the graces we undeservedly receive from him. |
