Among the varied interpretations of the Lucan "sword," that of "separation" is the most touching. A sword cuts and divides, hence, separates. The sword for Mary means being separated from the Lord, viz., during the loss at the temple, during the public ministry and to top it all, during crucifixion and death on the cross. We have our own experiences of the sword of separation. May Mary's maternal intercession make them easy for us. |
