Saints invariably love "holy abasement." They find joy in knowing that they are less known while others increase in fame. That was the very attitude of John the Baptist when provoked by his followers. The latter are threatened by the growing popularity of Jesus. The precursor, ever humble, said "He must increase. I must decrease." Let us take delight in the success of others. Being happy for them is a joy that is very Christian. It is a joy beyond human telling. |
