Celebrating a chair? What is so important in that chair? Nothing if it is an ordinary chair, but it is the chair of Peter. The gospel pictures the primacy of Peter, the Rock on which the Church was built. Being "primus inter pares," Peter enjoys that power bestowed by Jesus. This is enjoyed by the Pope whose power is supreme and ordinary, immediate and full. When the pope speaks "ex cathedra" or "from the chair," there we recognize the power behind the chair. |
