Worship of God devoid of charity for the poor becomes empty words and meaningless gestures. Those who traded in the temple exploited the poor. They levied more than the usual exchange of the coins (shekels) to be offered to the temple. They overpriced the animals for offering. When the little ones are trampled upon, God will not be pleased. He will close his ears when we call on his name (cf. Is. 1:12-17). |
