The English language has a technique of affirming positively by way of negation. For example, it says "not bad" to actually mean "good." Today's gospel says "You are not from the kingdom" which means "you are near." Be that as it may, the statement connotes only a proximity and not yet a perfect fulfillment. The kingdom ("basileia" in Greek) is God's gift but we have to work for the "reign" of love, justice and peace. There is no elevator. We have to take the stairs. |
