Stabat Mater. Yes, Mary was standing by the cross. In fact, she was "next to the Crucified" as evidenced by the Greek words of the Johannine gospel. Mary became a partner or associate of Jesus in the work of salvation. Should we not partake of the continuing salvific work of the Lord? Jesus has offered his life. We, too, are invited to take up our crosses, experience self-dying, thus becoming instruments in saving humanity. |
