If taken literally, today's gospel [which promises immortality for those who eat the heavenly bread] won't be accepted. The fact is: Those who have partaken of the bread died, just the same. What kind of life is being spoken of here? It is eternal life. Behind the physical food, the bread, is the life eternal promised by the Lord. With that Bread, we shall reach heaven and there inherit everlasting life. |
