Only when candles burn can they share light. Only when grapes are crushed can they give wine. When branches are pruned, they "hurt" but the leaves sprout anew and grow more abundantly. Such pruning in today's gospel refers to the inevitable trials of life as a consequence of following Jesus. We need to be pruned [in Greek "airei" which is related to "kathairei" that sounds like "katharoi" or "made pure and clean."] in order to to be cleansed, to share the cross of Jesus, remain with him and subsequently bear fruits. |
