One test of piety is secrecy. A truly pious person does not seek public approval or admiration. In the threefold spirituality of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, the common message is practice in secrecy. These acts, according to Jesus, are performed not to be seen. If we do something good to be "praised by watchers," we have not yet attained a genuine piety. |
