Why do we have a day off? weekend? summer break? vacation leave? We avoid what Pope Francis calls "disease of excessive activity." Genesis tells us that God himself rested after his work of creation. Israel was given the day of rest, the Shabbat. When Jesus invited his apostles to rest a while, he knew they were enervated after their mission. We don't overlook our needed rest. It is a reward for us who have labored well. |
