Slavery invariably connotes absence of freedom. A slave who is at the disposal of another simply cannot do what he pleases. In today's gospel, Jesus speaks of the slavery of sin. To be a Jew does not of itself constitute one free. Jews, too, can be sinners and as St. Paul says, "the sinner is a slave of sin" (cf. Rom. 6:17). Only by liberating ourselves from the enslavement of sins can we truly enjoy the true freedom of the children of God. |
