Who would want to hear a litany of self-praise? Such self-aggrandizement turns us off. That was exactly the scandalous show-off of the Pharisee in today's gospel. Which is our own attitude at times. Would that we were as humble as the tax collector whose words touched the heart of God, "have mercy on me, a sinner." A prayer marked by humility is one that wins the esteem of God. |
