What kind of perfection is being referred to by Jesus in today's gospel? It is neither ontological perfection nor moral impeccability. To be "perfect" is to be "whole and undivided" which the Hebrew word "tamim" and the Greek word "teleios" imply. God has this perfection which we must imitate. He loves all men, both saints and sinners. He causes both sunrise and raindrops for all. |
