Against common misconception that a private room symbolizes silence and privacy, today's gospel says another thing. When Jesus says "Go to your inner room and close the door," he reminds us that, in prayer, we must go to a place where there are no admirers [the Greek word "tameion" means a storeroom where people do not stay]. Prayer is not for ostentatious display. We do not pray "to be seen." |
