Seniority (Gen. 43:33) and social rank (Prov. 25:6-7) determine one's position at table in Jewish society. This is the Old Testament background of today's gospel. Jesus said, "When you are invited to a wedding, do not recline at table in the place of honor." This is not simply table manners or meal etiquette. It is a call to humility. It's good to be humble at all times. When we are down, our only direction is to get up. |
