A barren woman. A fruitless tree. An unproductive land. These images bespeak futility and meaninglessness. The master is frustrated to find the fig tree not bearing fruits for years. Similarly God is sad in finding us doing nothing and not bearing any fruit. We are graced and are expected to be fruitful. Our fecundity becomes our response to God's graciousness. "Go forth and bear fruit." That's a tall order. It must be rightly heard. |
