Two types of look -- downwards and upwards. By looking downwards, we find shorter people. That was the Pharisee. He was casting glances about the tax-collector whom he considered less virtuous than he was. Meanwhile the tax-collector looked up, as it were looking up to God, longing for forgiveness [in Greek "Hilastheti moi"] without comparing himself to anyone else. Someone said, "Let us not look down on others unless we are admiring their shoes." |
