How do we deal with people getting depressed? Simple! We let them feel they are not alone. The Risen Lord did just that. He offered to the two disciples [on the road to Emmaus] what modern counselors call "pastoral accompaniment." He drew close to them. He entered into conversation and listened to them. He stayed with the two. With them He broke bread [cf. Bishop David's homily]. There are many people who experience "depression" in varying degrees. They don't need our advice. They need our [real or virtual] consoling presence. |
