To be compassionate is to be one with the other person. In fact, the equivalenf Greek word for compassion [splangchnizomai] means "to feel what the other is feeling." When Jesus was moved with pity, he felt the agony of the crowds who appeared like sheep without a shepherd. Unless we show such oneness with a suffering fellow, compassion will be reduced to a mere idea. Mercy is coupled with a heart that loves and a hand that moves. |
