There are people, non-Catholics and [sadly] Catholics alike who don't believe in sacramental confession. They claim they confess "direct(ly) to God" because priests are human beings who cannot forgive sins. Perhaps they quote the Scribes and pharisees who, in today's gospel, say, "Who can forgive sins but God alone." Very true. It is God who forgives sins but He wills that through the sacrament of Penance, priests "absolve penitents from their sins." Jesus himself said, "Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven" (Jn. 20:23). |
