"Chaire." This Greek word can mean "Hello" or "Rejoice." The latter gains wider acceptance among the exegetes. It is consistent with Zeph. 3:14 and a number of Infancy narrative texts. The Filipino version "Magalak ka, Maria" is faithful to the original Greek. Mary is invited to rejoice for the singular privilege. She is to be the Mother of God. At the end of the pericope, she gave a joyful response [in Greek "genoito"]. The Virgin of Nazareth, declared "immaculately conceived" by Pope Pius IX in 1854, invites us to REJOICE. Joy is life. Joy is spirituality. |
