Pointer. That's the role of a precursor. Likened to Elijah, John the Baptist was a pointer. He prepared for the coming of Jesus and as it were, pointed to him. To be a pointer is to be a "sacrament," a living sign. It is to signify something other than itself. The Baptizer admitted he was a precursor of someone else whose sandal he is not worthy to unfasten. He said "He must increase..." We are Christians, pointing to Christ whose name we bear. |
