The French people call it "raison d'etre." Perhaps it is not only a final cause [reason for existence] but also an efficient cause. It tells how we exist and the answer is God, the Emmanuel. Today's gospel quotes Isaiah 7:14 which mentions "Emmanuel" from the Hebrew which means "With-us-God." Both in the Old and in the New Testaments the presence of God was a reality in the lives of the people. Today we say we can do what we do and accomplish what we accomplish because GOD IS WITH US. Emmanuel is a sacred name... a reassuring presence. |
