After delivering a "lectio brevis," a short Marian lecture, I was asked by my former professor, "Why was Zechariah punished and Mary was not when both raised questions about childbirth. To objectively explain today's gospel without prejudice, I told him that Zechariah doubted and his was a question of fact: "I cannot believe that my old and barren wife Elizabeth would conceive." Mary never doubted and hers was a question of process, as it were, saying, "I know I will conceive a child. I wish to know how, since I do not know man." My professor nodded. I wish you, readers, also do. |
