It is so sweeping a statement if we interpret Mary's sword as referring to her seven sorrows. While it may be considered so, there is more to such purely devotional interpretation. Biblical scholars see in that "sword" the idea of discipleship. Mary had to accept the fact that her physical motherhood is relegated to the second place. More important is her spiritual relationship with Jesus. She is greater as a disciple than a mother. Such difficulty in acceptance is itself a suffering, a true sword. |
