A severely injured soldier who was nearing his death refused to eat but when he learned that his mother sent a bread which she herself baked, the soldier took delight and partook of the bread. Gradually, he recovered... Bread that gives eternal life -- This is what we should desire, says Jesus in today's gospel. We are "soldiers of Christ" battling for faith. We get wounded and draw strength from the bread "baked by God." |
