The motif of light and darkness is very Johannine. Yes, the evangelist John introduces Jesus as the Light, yet people preferred darkness. This reflects the reality of sin in the world. Lest their sins come to the fore, people love to stay in the dark. Irony of ironies -- Those people, in baptism, have been illuminated by Christ but remain in darkness. We are challenged by this reality. Shall we follow the path to darkness and abandon the Light? |
