Lest we forget, the word "hypocrisy" is derived from a foreign word that means "actor's mask." It has to do with a theater or a theatrical presentation. In today's gospel Jesus warn us against ostentatious display of piety. The threefold "prayer, fasting and almsgiving" should never be performed "to be seen" and subsequently applauded. One has to peform such acts in the "absence of admirers" as implied in the "room" which is a store room ["tameion" in Greek"]. |
