You are only allowed to LOOK DOWN on a person if you are admiring his/her shoes. In today's gospel, the townmates of Jesus looked down on the Lord because they knew his origin and background. He was "just" a son of a carpenter [in Greek "tekton."] and was, therefore, of humble beginnings. This reflects our own attitude towards the poor and the unlettered. "Nothing is more preposterous than the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed , well-warmed and well-fed," says Herman Melville.
