HABEMUS PAPAM!

Pope Leo XIV Ushers in a New Chapter for the Catholic Church

21 May 2025

The bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang joyfully as white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signaling to the world: Habemus Papam. The Church now rejoices in the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the 267th successor of St. Peter and the first pope from the United States.

The historic announcement was made by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti, who proclaimed the joyful words: “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!” Moments later, Pope Leo XIV emerged on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and greeted the faithful with a simple and heartfelt message: “Peace be with all of you.”

A Shepherd with a Global Heart
Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV brings with him a deep missionary spirit and decades of pastoral experience, especially from his years serving in Peru. His fluency in English, Spanish, and Italian reflects his ability to connect with the Church across continents, embodying the universality of the Catholic faith.

Before becoming pope, he served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, playing a key role in shaping the leadership of the global Church. His deep love for the Church and experience in both North and South America give him a broad and compassionate perspective as he begins his pontificate.

Inauguration: A Call to Unity and Peace
During the solemn inauguration Mass on May 18, attended by hundreds of thousands in St. Peter’s Square and watched by millions worldwide, Pope Leo XIV received the Fisherman’s Ring and the pallium, symbols of his authority as Bishop of Rome and shepherd of the universal Church.

In his first homily as pope, he emphasized the Church’s mission of walking together in love, peace, and fidelity to Christ. “Let us journey as one family of God, building bridges, healing wounds, and proclaiming the Gospel with joy,” he said.

A Pontificate Full of Hope
Pope Leo XIV has already captured the hearts of many with his warmth, humility, and clarity of vision. He has begun meeting with leaders of other faiths and communities, signaling a continued commitment to dialogue, peacebuilding, and global solidarity.

As the Church moves forward under the guidance of Pope Leo XIV, the faithful are filled with renewed hope. His name, reminiscent of Pope Leo the Great, points to a legacy of wisdom and courageous leadership—qualities the world longs for today.

Indeed, the Church echoes the joyful cry: Habemus Papam! Viva il Papa! Long live Pope Leo XIV!
