Pope Francis, of happy memory, repeatedly preached about Jesus as the "misericordiae vultus" or "face of the mercy" of God. Today’s gospel centers on the same theme. Jesus had mercy on the sinners. Quoting the Prophet Hosea, he declared "I desire mercy not sacrifice." It is an irony that we call ourselves Christians but readily condemn an erring brother. Would that even in little ways we reveal the face of God's mercy. |
