St. Thomas Aquinas defined "law" as an "ordinance of reason promulgated for the COMMON GOOD by those who are in charge of a society." Today's gospel implies that laws of Sabbath are made for man and serve man's good. Laws are not supposed to be enslaving. They must be liberating instead. When we focus not on the letters of the law but on its spirit which is love, we achieve its purpose or raison d'etre. |
