Chasm is symbolic. It is not only a cleft in the surface of the earth. In today's gospel, it is symbol of distance separating the rich Dives and the poor Lazarus. The former has become insensitive to the needs of the latter. Which is a microcosm of the lamentable distance between the affluent wallowing in abundance and the poor dying in extreme destitution. How can the rich live in affluence when the poor hunger for food? |
