The immediate post-Christmas celebration of St. Stephen's martyrdom changes the mood of the faithful. From a joyful proclamation of the birth of Jesus we shift to the gloomy death of the very first martyr. But there is a profound message common to both. In life and in death, the virtue of hope shines forth. Whether we live or die, if we are for the Lord, we find the deep meaning of life. Jesus was born. St. Stephen died. BOTH LIVED. |
