The meekness of a lamb is tested in the presence of rapacious wolves. The sanctity of a person shines forth in the midst of temptations. In today's gospel, Jesus prayed not that his disciples may be taken out of the world but to be kept from the evil one ["poneros" in Greek which refers more likely to Satan]. It is neither heroic nor virtuous to escape the battleground of piety. A saintly Christian stays, braves the battle and ends up victorious. |
