The prayer of a proud heart is never pleasing to God. Only with great pride did the Pharisee stand before God to pray. The opposite is true with the tax collector. He could not look up but bowed in total humility. How do we pray? Do we make a litany of our virtues? It is not prayer but self-aggrandizement and ostentatious display. With deep humility let us speak with God. "Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner." That is the prayer most pleasing to God. |
