LUCENA CITY — The Diocese of Lucena reached a spiritual milestone today, April 27, 2026, as four seminarians were elevated to the Sacred Order of Deacons. In a solemn and grace-filled liturgy at the St. Ferdinand Cathedral, Most Rev. Mel Rey M. Uy, D.D., Bishop of Lucena, presided over the ordination, marking a season of rejoicing for the local Church.
The newly ordained deacons—Rev. Mark Joven Maga, Rev. Samuel Pollo, Rev. John Paul Ranas, and Rev. Kyle Ron Red—received the laying on of hands and the consecratory blessing from Bishop Mel Rey.
During his homily, Bishop Mel Rey reminded the ordinands that the diaconate is rooted in a "ministry of presence." He challenged the four men to remain steadfast in their devotion, urging them to stand firmly with the Church as it navigates the diverse and often challenging circumstances of the modern world.
"To serve the Lord is to journey with His people," the Bishop remarked, emphasizing that their new roles are defined by humble service and the unwavering accompaniment of the faithful.
This ordination carries special significance as the Diocese of Lucena is currently celebrating its Jubilee Year. The addition of four new deacons is being hailed as a divine gift during this celebratory period, signaling a vibrant future for the Catholic community.
In the coming days, the new deacons will receive their official parish assignments across the diocese, where they will immerse themselves in community building, liturgical service, and pastoral care.
