Why does the love of God occupy the prime place? Why is it the first among the commandments, 613 all in all? One reason is simple. When we love God we will find it easy to love his creatures. We will not have difficulty seeing him in the image of men. The Shema [Hear, O Israel] enjoins us to love God as the first commandment because everything else follows. This love of God naturally impels us to love our neighbor. |
