Both Mary and the Church enjoy the gift of maternity. Mary gave birth to Jesus while the Church gives birth to Christians through baptism. When Jesus died, Mary was there standing by the cross. She witnessed the flowing out of water (baptism) and blood (eucharist) from the pierced side of Jesus. She continuously gazes upon the Church as a mother, entrusting her children to her own Son, Jesus. |
