Sincerity comes from the Latin "sincerus" which means "clean, pure, honest." I dare imagine that the word "sincere" is derived fom the Latin "sine+cera" meaning "without + wax." A waxed object appears more beautiful and purer than what it really is. That is the hypocrisy chided by Jesus in today's gospel. The Pharisees and Herodians who were trying to ensnare Jesus were hypocritically insincere. If we lack sincerity, our works and words are in vain. We become more disgusting than we already are. |
