The macarism proclaimed in today's gospel is directed to Mary whose womb carried Jesus. The Lord, however, made it clear that Divine Maternity was not the cause of Mary's blessedness but her discipleship. As St. Augustine puts it, "Before Mary conceived Jesus in her womb, she first conceived him in her heart."When we do God's will we, too, can be considered blessed. |
