The Filipino word "ganti" has two shades of meaning. Negatively it means "revenge." Positively it suggests a "grateful reciprocity" , ie, "ganting-loob." The law of retaliation quoted in today's gospel is lifted from Lev. 24:20. It ensures proportionality between the harm inflicted and the corresponding punishment. Kapag nakaganti ako, hindi pa rin ako masaya. Ang kasiyahan ay nasa pagpapatawad. Galing iyon sa "loob" at "ganti" lamang sa kabutihan ng Diyos. |
