I am inclined to believe that Abraham Maslow did not even think of affirmation/appreciation as part of what he calls "hierarchy of needs." Many people fall into the temptation of seeking public admiration when doing acts of piety. In today's gospel, Jesus taught his followers that the triple acts of prayer, fasting and almsgiving should be devoid of flamboyance. They must be motivated by genuine faith and pure love, never by an obtrusive display with the purpose of being admired. |
