A sign points to something other than itself. My brother's death has become a sign to me, pointing to heaven which I desire. In today's gospel, people demanded a sign and Jesus gave them the sign of Jonah that points to the reality of the resurrection. We, human beings invariably look for signs. May these signs point to something else -- to a striking message that earthly life is short and must be lived well.
